Wishlist Launches Search for Top Dogs to Join Therapy Dog Program

26 Sep 2025

Wishlist, the Sunshine Coast and Gympie’s local hospital charity, is calling on dog lovers to join its mission to bring more “paws on hospital floors.”

The Wishlist Therapy Dog Program, proudly supported by the Petstock Foundation, provides comfort, distraction and smiles to patients, families and hospital staff.
Now, Wishlist is looking to expand the initiative with additional Therapy Dog teams.
There is no single “perfect” breed for therapy work – what matters most is temperament.
Dogs must be calm, well-behaved and gentle to navigate the busy hospital environment.
Handlers are equally important, providing guidance and reassurance during visits.

Wishlist CEO Brendan Hogan said the program delivers extraordinary benefits.
“Being part of the Wishlist Therapy Dog Program is incredibly rewarding,” he said.
“Whether it’s easing a child’s nerves before surgery, lifting the spirits of someone undergoing treatment, or offering comfort to our hardworking health staff, these dogs make an extraordinary difference.”

Therapy Dog team handlers describe the experience as deeply rewarding.
Sharon, who visits with her dogs Bella and Koda, said the impact is visible.
“What’s most enjoyable about being a Wishlist Therapy Dog handler is seeing the smiles that come onto people’s faces," she said.

Handler Bob Piesse, who brings his dog Abby, said successful therapy teams are built on trust and companionship.
“A good therapy dog needs to have a love of humanity and a love of people and like being close to people," he said.
"It doesn’t mean the dog has to be all over you and lick your face, but they need to enjoy people’s company and enjoy people’s attention.
“What makes a good dog handler is somebody who loves their dog, and has a good relationship with their dog, and who has time.”
