For the past 24 years Wishlist has directed fundraising efforts to initiatives that best support a rapidly growing Health Service, and Sunshine Coast population in need of help at a local hospital.

Wishlist is now delivering Australia’s first facility offering affordable patient accommodation, healthcare and complementary therapies under one roof. Partly funded by a $12 million grant through the Australian Government’s Department of Health, Community Health and Hospitals Program and a $2 million gift from local philanthropists Roy and Nola Thompson, Wishlist Centre will support more patients and their families requiring ongoing treatment at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital.

Collaborations within the facility will provide integrated cancer support services, education, training and research to support the patient’s health journey, coupled with spaces designed specifically to support young adults and adolescent mental health initiatives.

Located conveniently opposite the Sunshine Coast University Hospital, Wishlist Centre offers a unique circle-of-care for those experiencing a health crisis, away from the clinical environment of a hospital.

THE OPPORTUNITY

We know that the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service (SCHHS) catchment is one of the fastest growing in Queensland, with the population expected to grow by 140,000 residents over the next 15 years.

Our rural patients find accessing healthcare services challenging. Gympie residents have the highest levels of chronic disease, are an aging population and have limited transport options.

The need for transitionary accommodation has grown over the 11 years we have managed affordable patient and family accommodation. More patients are receiving ongoing treatment for cancer, dialysis, complications in pregnancy or are requiring pre-op/post-op care. We know being close to a local hospital or having loved ones close during or after a medical crisis is critical to enhancing a patient’s wellbeing during this time.
