Journey with Adrian McCallum as he recounts some of his polar adventures and reflects upon the changing nature of his work...

Dr Adrian McCallum is Head of Engineering at the University of the Sunshine Coast, where he manages courses in soil mechanics, weather and climate. An accomplished adventurer, scientist and engineer, Adrian has travelled extensively across some of the world’s most remote environments, including the Arctic, Antarctica, Greenland, Svalbard, the Himalaya and Patagonia.

He holds a PhD from the Scott Polar Research Institute at the University of Cambridge, alongside degrees in oceanography, meteorology and civil engineering. During 20 years with the Australian Defence Forces, Adrian served in diverse roles including helicopter navigator, meteorologist and civil engineer, and has led and participated in numerous scientific expeditions.

Adrian was awarded the Australian Centenary Medal for his stewardship of the 2001 Australian Army Centenary Everest Expedition and later orchestrated Sir Ranulph Fiennes’ groundbreaking 2013 winter Transantarctic expedition.
