Advanced Podiatrist Scott Lucadou-Wells is pleased to share the potential outcomes of Sunshine Coast University Hospital’s first pressure guardian device tailored for diabetics experiencing foot ulcers.

Last year Mr Lucadou-Wells applied to Wishlist to combat a major barrier with diabetes’ patients presenting to hospital.

“Many patients are unable to feel an injury on the foot – because of a reduced sensation and circulation of the foot. We deal with around 200 patients with foot ulcers,” Mr Lucadou-Wells said.

The pressure guardian device – worth $7500 – allows clinicians to measure the pressure underneath the foot which can promote faster healing times, reduce lower body amputations, and foot ulcer reoccurrence.

“A key part of managing the injury is to build a device that takes the pressure off the injury like a plaster cast or moon boot. The pressure guardian device allows us to optimise the device by providing direct measurement of the pressure at the affected site.”

“This helps clinicians decide which device might be most appropriate and which modifications are most effective for the individual patient.

“Thanks Wishlist for funding this great opportunity.”

Wishlist’s next project funding and staff scholarships round will commence in July 2023. Find out more how we support our local heroes here.
