In palliative care, music therapists use methods such as song writing, improvisation, guided imagery and music, lyric analysis, singing, instrument playing and music therapy relaxation techniques to treat the many needs of patients and families receiving care.

Wishlist has committed to funding a music therapy program for Dove Palliative Care patients until 2020 for 15 hours per week.

Nurse Unit Manager Clodagh Barwise-Smith said music therapy made a remarkable difference to patients nearing their final days, and their families.

Wishlist also provides funds to the Dove Palliative Care Unit for end-of-days life recordings which serves as a priceless memento for family members, bereavement programs, music therapy, the Delta Therapy Dogs program and specialised equipment.

In 2016, the Velvet Country Music Club (pictured left) donated $6000 to the Palliative Care Unit after fundraising through an annual concert, sausage sizzles and raffles.

"Over the years we have been touched by a lot of our members having to be in Dove Cottage palliative care," Velvet Country Music Club president Sandy Lewis said.

"We’ve lost four people just in a couple of years through cancer that were assisted by Dove.

“My own mum was here in 2004 and the care that was given to her was amazing.”
