Sunshine Coast Cancer Centre
For five years the Sunshine Coast united with Wishlist in a landmark fundraising campaign to provide a better local cancer treatment service at Nambour Hospital.
The Centre has brought a range of cancer treatment services together under one roof at Nambour Hospital reducing the need for cancer patients to travel to Brisbane for treatment.
Wishlist was proud to officially open the Centre on 28th January, 2006.
Our fundraising campaign for the Centre continues through the annual Wishlist Row For Cancer and other events.
In 2001 Wishlist embarked on our first major capital fundraising campaign, to raise $1.5 million to establish the Sunshine Coast Cancer Centre.
The campaign aimed to capitalise on planned improvements to the local health service infrastructure. The Centre would facilitate state-of-the-art multi-disciplinary case management for cancer patients of the Sunshine Coast and surrounding areas.
The potential would then exist to include a Chemotherapy Unit, a Psychological Support Unit, a Palliative Care Centre, dedicated cancer beds, an Oncological Pharmacy, an Epidemiological Research Centre with a local focus, and ultimately accommodation for outpatients from other Districts.
The Cancer Centre would dramatically improve local services available to cancer patients by establishing a supportive treatment environment close to family and friends.
A major part of the campaign funds were raised through a mammoth project aptly named The House the Coast Built, which saw the community come together to build a charity home for free which was then succesfully auctioned off. All proceeds were directed towards building the Sunshine Coast Cancer Centre at Nambour General Hospital.
Community support for the campaign was overwhelming.

What's an EBUS?
EBUS = Endoscopic Bronchial Ultrasound
It will make a phenomenal difference to local families faced with the prospect of lung cancer.
An EBUS helps to quickly and accurately determine the stage of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Staging is the process used to find out how far the cancer has spread, and this then determines the treatment path. Without adequate staging of non-small cell lung cancer patients are at risk of inappropriate, risky and costly surgery or, even worse, being inaccurately assessed as "advanced" stage and thus denied potentially life saving treatment!
For local patients, an EBUS here means:
- No more expensive, invasive or unnecessary tests
- Quicker and more accurate diagnosis of lung cancer
- More effective course of treatment
- Less emotional, psychological and financial stress on patients and their loved ones.
It's also a very major step up for local respiratory services in the lead up to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital.
The appeal - Got a buck for an EBUS?
For six months Wishlist asked the entire Sunshine Coast community to contribute to the EBUS appeal and dig deep to further support local cancer services, as it did during our $1.7million campaign to build the Sunshine Coast Cancer Centre.
Through a radio, print and mailout campaign along with donation tins placed in businesses across the Coast, fundaising events and large donations from generous supporters, our goal of having the EBUS ordered by the end of March 2013 has been acheived.
We are now thrilled to announce that thanks to the incredible support of this community we've raised the $315,000 needed to purchase the EBUS and it is now available for patients at Nambour Hospital.
Thank you for helping make a real difference to local families living with cancer by giving a buck for an EBUS. Your small change has made a big one!

A big thank you to our campaign partners Westpac, Telstra Business Centre, Stockland and media partners 92.7 Mix FM and the Sunshine Coast Daily!
We must also thank the businesses and major donors, without whom we could not have achieved our goal.
* Murphy Builders QLD donated $60,000 to the EBUS thanks to the donated and discounted work of their company and many of their subcontractors and material suppliers who built the Wishlist Sky Bridge in mid 2012. Due to the generosity of the companies who contributed towards that building project, Murphy Builders were left with a $60,000 surplus which they generously gave to Wishlist for the EBUS.
We are also grateful and inspired by the hundreds of others who donated to the EBUS appeal, the volunteers who gave their time to attend events and fundraise, the businesses who let us use their counter space for a donation tin and the health staff who held raffles and did what they could to raise funds. Your generosity and willingness to invest in the future of health care for our community is inspiring. THANK YOU!
